Malachy was never meant to end up at the bottom of Lake Burion as part of the enchantment, though, honestly, I couldn’t say I’m surprised. It’s what I’d expect from a fairy like Carabosse. She has no self-control. The only reason King Geoffrey isn’t at the bottom of the lake, too, is because Carabosse enjoys seeing him squirm. She meant to humiliate him as part of his refusal to accept her offer of a magical kingdom. When Carabosse found out from the midwife that Eglantine was carrying the eighth child, and, according to prophecy the final one the Queen would deliver, was a boy, her fairy-ship naturally couldn’t leave well enough alone. Poof! Off tto the bottom of the lake the baby boy goes!
Fairy Queen Oona tried to get Carabosse to make peace with King Geoffrey time and again, but both were too pigheaded in those days. Carabosse refused to undo the lake enchantment. Oona had her own reasons for wanting the child released from the lake. Carabosse wasn’t the only fairy casting spells.
All these magical enchantments took their toll on the innocent villagers. They found their way to the little cabin in the woods where I lived with Maeve and Tom. And although the coming events took up a great deal of my nap time, the circumstances led to meeting Princess Camellia. Believe me, I could have traded in my three remaining lives and gone to kitty-heaven right then.
