Description

by Sue Mattinson

When Sue Mattinson moved to South Charleston in 2010, she discovered a village steeped in history. She was soon asked to be a trustee for the Heritage Commission Corporation and was introduced to long-time residents who told stories of the early days of the village.

One name from the past stood out – Edward Edwards. One day, while helping conduct a village tour, she wondered “who was Edward Edwards?”
Her research eventually led to the story of Edward Edwards, the man who built South Charleston, Ohio. This account of his life is interwoven with the histories of the houses that he built. He experienced the joys and heartaches of family life – losing his first wife and eventually three of his children, and having three more children with his second wife. Meanwhile he worked as a master carpenter for 53 years building towering public structures, modest homes, and dwellings filled with Victorian charm.

His sudden death marked the end of the Victorian era in the village, but the buildings lining its streets continued to tell his story.

The Heritage Commission hosted an Edward Edwards presentation in the Town Hall in 2018. Responses poured in. “For the next week I couldn’t stop looking at houses.” “He was not just some boring old guy who lived a long time ago, but a fascinating man who gave a lot of himself to this town.” “The result [of the talk] was a connection to the past no one knew they would have and a lecture that could be enjoyed by all.”

The presentation was awarded a History Outreach Award by the Ohio Local History Alliance in 2019. This book is an expansion of that talk.
